Cooldown Cape
Product information "Cooldown Cape"
The COOLDOWN CAPE offers your dog the perfect passive protection in intense sunlight without getting too cold for the dog's muscles!
Like a mirror, the shiny side reflects 85% of the sun's rays and thus reliably keeps the heat out.
The fabric consists of robust polyester threads that are vapourised with an aluminium coating.
The material is light as a feather (approx. 120 grams size L), it does not absorb water and does not hinder the dog in any way!
At the same time, the fabric of the COOLDOWN Capes is highly permeable to air due to its open structure, so that the dog cannot heat up in the first place. This reliably prevents heat build-up!

The dog cannot sweat over a large area like humans. The few sweat glands a dog has are mainly located on the paw pads. These hardly contribute to temperature regulation.
The dog regulates its temperature with the help of heat emission via its skin and also with the help of its breathing; it begins to pant when it is hot. The tongue hangs far out of the mouth and the breathing frequency is clearly increased. Inhalation takes place through the nose, whereby the air brushes past the nasal mucous membranes, which are well supplied with blood.
Exhalation takes place via the tongue, which is covered with a lot of saliva. Both have a cooling effect, the liquid evaporates in the air and thus cools the mucous membrane surface.
How can you cool them down?
The best and quickest way to cool down is to allow the dog to swim briefly.
If this possibility does not exist, then the dog's coat should be wetted with water, especially the neck, chest, legs and paws.
For dogs with a very dense undercoat, the water should be worked into the coat, otherwise there is a risk of heat build-up on the skin.
When the water evaporates on the coat, evaporative cooling occurs, which cools the dog down quickly. (When cooling the dog, please be aware that it can be a strain on the dog's circulation if it is very overheated and is suddenly immersed in very cold water.
Never use ice-cold water to cool your dog down, the temperature difference should not be too high.
For dogs that are afraid of water, it helps to put their paws in a bowl of water to cool them down. In this way, you also provide them with some cooling).
The COOLDOWN CAPE cools the dog passively, as the dog is reliably protected from the sun's rays by the reflection of radiation! Heating up is thus prevented.
So there is no active "cooling down", so the dog can never get too cold!
The advantage over active cooling coats:
Prevention of hypothermic diseases such as rheumatism or arthritis. Cooling down of the sensitive back muscles is also avoided.
The "Cooldown Cape" is extremely light with a weight of approx. 120gr (size L) and does not hinder in any way. - Cooling waistcoats, on the other hand, actively cool the dog.
These have to be soaked in water before use so that the material soaks up, which is why they are very heavy. The wet cooling waistcoat is put on the dog. When it gets warm, the liquid stored in the granules or material evaporates. The result is evaporative cooling. The disadvantage of this is that the dog cannot tell when it is too cool for him. Too much cold can be very uncomfortable, especially on the back, and this can lead to muscle tension.
In addition, active cooling waistcoats are extremely heavy. The dog's muscles are actively cooled down, which can lead to an increased risk of injury during sporting activities.
In long-haired dogs with a lot of undercoat, there is also the possibility that the layer of air in the coat completely prevents the cooling effect and even the opposite effect occurs.
Applications:
The COOLDOWN CAPES is ideal for dogs... - with black or dark coats that heat up quickly - with very dense undercoats that do not cool down well - with rheumatism or arthritis - during sporting activities - during prolonged stays in the hot sun - senior dogs - Protects against UV rays (naked dogs, shorn dogs, dogs with skin problems).
Our Tip:
When using the COOLDOWN CAPES, combine it with an actively cooling cooling mat or a wet towel for the dog to lie on while waiting. The dog is free to choose whether, how long and how completely he wants to lie down on it. If it gets too cold, he can leave it and lie down somewhere else.
